πŸ’» 7 Knitting Blogs That Will Level Up Your Skills

It's a bit surprising, but there are not that many websites geared toward deepening your understanding of knitting.

There are plenty of craft blogs, or pattern hubs, or stitch indexes.

While many knitwear designers used to maintain blogs with articles about their craft, most stopped being updated during the pandemic.

Still, there are a few resources I've found myself returning to again and again to improve my own skills.

So here are 7 knitting blogs I think are worth checking out.

TECHknitting

If you visit ONE site from this list, it NEEDS to be this one.

Since 2006 the TECHknitter has been creating the MOST in depth technical knitting content online.

She has detailed illustrations (which she makes herself) and genuinely thinks about knitting in a way that no one else does.

Favorite Post: Charting charts: a new way to keep track of knitting lace

Modern Daily Knitting

This blog began as an exchange between pen pals Ann Shayne and Kay Gardiner back in 2003.

But in 2016 they rebranded and shifted their focus to something of an online knitting magazine.

While the site now has a large print publishing focus and yarn store, they also have an incredibly useful How To section. It contains hundreds of posts from dozens of contributors, including regulars Patty Lyons and Kate Atherley.

Favorite Post: Knitting Comfortably: The Playground

Nimble Needles

We've talked about Norman's great YouTube videos already, but he also has an incredibly useful blog.

It's the closest thing there is to a Wikipedia for knitting.

His articles are in depth and well researched, and don't feel like they're just filled with fluff.

He's truly building a resource that will help you deepen your knitting knowledge.

Favorite Post: Expert Knitting Hacks for Better Results

Talvi Knits by Susanna Winter

I do a lot of research for The Yarnist and I often find myself on Susanna's site reading a super interesting article about something I hadn't thought about.

While she mostly releases beautiful patterns there, she also has a bunch of practical posts on how to be a better knitter, or answering nagging knitting questions.

There aren't a lot of knitwear designers that I follow online, but she's one of them.

Noble Knits

I met Nancy years ago back when Noble Knits was an online yarn store. In recent years she's shifted gears and become more of a knitting resource.

If you're looking for seasonal or holiday pattern ideas, she does a great job of curating interesting projects on specific topics.

But she also has a lot of useful articles to help you become a better knitter one stitch at a time!

Tin Can Knits

This site is the collaboration between two Canadian designers; Alexa Ludeman and Emily Wessel. They met at while working at a yarn store and have been designing together since 2010.

While they primarily publish patterns, they have a great blog that offers a lot of variety. Not only do they post useful tutorials, but they also have lovely introspections on the knitting journey.

If you want a blog that's "about" being a knitter without the journaling type posts, this is a great resource.

Favorite Post: The Life of a Sweater

PieceWork Magazine

Ok this one isn't "technically" a blog, but it is possible to browse the site and read some VERY interesting articles about traditional needlecraft.

If you're into history and yarn there's no better place for you.

I'd highly recommend getting a subscription to the full magazine, but you'll find plenty to keep you busy on their site.

Favorite Post: Department Stores As Purveyors Of Knitting Knowledge

Conclusion

So there you have it.

If you want to dive deeper into some of the resource we use here at the Yarnist, these are a great place to start.

But what do you think?

Do you have a favorite blog we didn't mention?

Hit reply and share it with us!

We'd love to hear your feedback. 😊

Daily Stitch

Smocked Rib

Smocking is the process of wrapping yarn horizontally around knitted stitches.

Usually this is to pull together stitches, creating a distortion in the fabric.

You can see this happening here, where 2x2 ribbing has been augmented to create a series of Xs.
