π° Are Interchangeable Knitting Needles Worth The Money?
Yes.
That's all folks! Thanks for reading! Have a great day!
Ok...ok...
You probably want to know why we think interchangeable needles are a great investment.
Here's 5 reasons why:
- Flexibility
βHas this happened to you? You're knitting a project with a size US8 circular needle and you need a change of pace, so you start working on a new project. That project also needs a US8 circular needle.
β
What do you do?
Put the original project on some waste yarn and take those needles for your new project?
Buy another set of needles that are exactly the same?
β
If you have a set of interchangeable needles, no biggie. Just take the needle tips off, put a different tip on or temporary stoppers, and now you can use those size 8s for a different project.
β
Need a really long cable to make a blanket? Just add an extension.
β
Want to drop down two sizes for your ribbing without having to buy a second needle for only a few rows? Just switch your tips.
β
Interchangeable needles solve a myriad of problems you might not even think you'd encounter.
β
- Portability
βHave you tried storing and organizing circular knitting needles?
It's a pain in the π.
β
Luckily most interchangeable sets come with well organized and attractive carrying cases that storing your needles a breeze.
β
- Expandabilityβ
While most sets come with 5 - 8 needle sizes, they often makes sets or individual needle tips that go beyond the standard options. It's possible to get little tips for lace and big tips for bulkier yarns.
β
You can easily buy tips in different materials like aluminum, steel, bamboo, or plastic. And some interchangeable sets even have square options.
β
Plus you can get additional cords at various lengths, connectors to combine smaller cords, and stoppers to turn those cords into stitch holders. π€―
β
- Replaceabilityβ
Ever break a cord? Chip a needle? Crack a tip?
β
Just like expanding your collection, you can also get replacement parts without having buy a whole new set of needles.
β
- Cost savings-ityβ
Interchangeable sets aren't cheap.
β
A decent set starts at around $60 USD and they can go up to $300+.
β
However, you'll find that you can do SO MUCH more with an interchangeable set than you can with a fixed circular needle. It's not like owning 6 sets of needles, it's like owning 4 sets of each needle tip size you have.
β
If each needle set cost $12 on its own and you had 7 tips per set, that's like having $336 worth of needles.
PLUS it comes in a nice case!
β
But that's not really the important savings. You also save time by not having to go to the store to get another set of needles, or wait for them to arrive in the mail.
So what interchangeables do I recommend?
The Addi Clicks are BY FAR my favorite interchangeable needles.
The Rocket Squares are very comfortable to knit with. I really like the faux leather wallet they come in, and the click connectors have always worked well for me. Some people say the connection becomes loose over time, but it hasn't been my experience.
They ain't cheap, but I've had two sets that have lasted a very long time with few issues.
But here are some other great options:
βChaigoo Twists - Best Overallβ
These are as dependable as they get. Made of steel with solid construction you get a great bang for your buck and they'll last for years.
β
βKnitPicks Prism - Best Budget Optionβ
Affordable and attractive, these needles are color coded by size so it's always easy to find what you're looking for. Made of anodized aluminum, they have nice sharp tips and are easy on the wallet.
β
βClover Takumi Bamboo - Best Bamboo Needlesβ
We're huge fans of Clover's bamboo needles, and have plenty of their circulars in our collection. It appears this interchangeable set is being discontinued, so they're available at HUGE 57% discount right now!
β
βLykke Driftwoods - Most Photogenicβ
Looks aren't everything, but they definitely help. If you like knitting with wood needles these are a great option. They come in a variety of sizes and a number beautiful carrying cases. We're particularly fond of the rainbow colors of this set.
β
βDenise Interchangeables - Best Made in North Americaβ
These are the only plastic needle set made in America. They're affordable for what you get, have fun colors, and feel good in the hand. My personal experience with these needles has been hit or miss, but lots of people love them!

Sand Wind Cable Stitch
The wind rips across golden grains of sand as the sun rises across the horizon of the Sahara.
It carves new curves into the sides of the dunes as a caravan of camels make their way to a far off oasis.
The desert is an everchanging canvas with an invisible painter creating a new masterpiece every day.
And this stitch captures the epic feeling of that landscape perfectly.
