πŸͺ„ The Magic of the Mini-Minder Yarn Holder

Hey Reader!

I have long held the belief that knitting fast is not that important.

Even though I have taught 5 different workshops on knitting faster πŸ˜….

The truth is the KEY to getting more knitting done is to knit consistently, not faster.

And the best way I've found to be more consistent with knitting is to have my knitting easily accessible.

Which is why I have absolutely fallen in love with the Lemonwood Mini-Minder yarn holder.

But before I talk about that, let's take a quick look at the history of yarn holders.

A brief history of yarn holders

Portable yarn holders are nothing new.

In fact wooden yarn bowls have been around for more than 100 years, and are still used to keep yarn from rolling around.

But the 50s and 60s saw an eruption of knitting "inventions" aimed at helping the average knitter.

Be it gauge rulers printed on needles or the "Knit-Wit" there was no shortage of knitting tools.

That included these beehive style yarn holders that allowed you to carry your project on your wrist.

However, the plastic construction and flimsy handles made these devices a bit impractical.

It wasn't until more than half a century later that someone would perfect a new solution.

What is a Mini-Minder?

I first encountered the mini-minder when scrolling through Instagram.

Folks were raving about this little yarn holder that hung from your wrist while you knit.

It's design is incredibly simple, but sometimes the most genius ideas are very simple indeed.

I interviewed Lemonwood owner Veronica Van earlier this year about the invention, and the design came about almost by accident.

She told her son she wished she had something that she could walk around the warehouse and knit at the same time.

The next day he had a prototype, and the rest is history!

Mini-Minder Magic

What makes the mini-minder magical is it's swivel hook.

Veronica has them custom made so they spin smooth as melted butter.

It allows the yarn to pull from the outside with almost zero friction, so you never have to tug on your ball for slack.

Instead you can knit continuously without effort.

And the mini-minder can easily be hung in the car, plane, or on a table making it the ideal travel accessory for knitters.

Combating Fakes

Because of the Mini-Minder's simple construction, there have been tons of knock-off from China.

Tik-Tok has plenty of examples of cheap, poorly made fakes meant to scam customers.

These often snap in the process of putting the yarn on and lack the attention to detail that Lemonwood puts into their products.

Which is why when I decided to include a Mini-Minder in our Summer of Colowork YarnCrate, I went straight to the source.

The Estonian Summer Mini-Minder
(YarnCrate Exclusive)

When I first approached the Lemonwood team about doing a custom mini-minder in our box they loved the idea.

But I didn't have a clear vision for what our design should be.

Luckily their design team came up with the PERFECT concept to include in the YarnCrate.

It's a take on one of their more popular designs, but incorporates the national butterfly of Estonia (where I live).

The Estonian swallowtail butterfly has beautiful black, white, and blue wings; the exact colors of the Estonian flag! 🀯

I'm in love with the design and we still have a few left.

But there's a small catch...

The only way to get one now is inside one of our YarnCrates.

And the good news is there's still a few boxes left!
