and the thought has found words"

✍🏼 I'm knitting this poem for you

Being someone who spends a lot of time writing for a living, its logical that I dabble in poetry myself.

I find it's a great exercise, trying to convey a thought or emotion in a limited amount of words.

I won't subject you to my amateur attempts right now, but I came across this poem I thought you might enjoy.

It's by a New Zealand poet named Vaughan Rapatahana.

I’m knitting this poem

for you.

knit 1 purl 2.

Found the pattern

in an old drawer

fraying at the seams.

knit 1 purl 2.

I’m tatting together

a crochet

to keep us warm.

p2sso.

Cabling

a colourful coverall

to contain love.

p2sso.

No slip-stitched

tangle here.

k2tog.

Only this

inter/twined/applique

taut to the touch.

k2tog.

I’m knitting this poem

for you.

knit 1 purl 2.

Ribbing together

a cardigan of care

we can don

anytime our world

unravels.

knit 1 purl 2.

I’ve sewn up

this poem

for you.

bind off.

Daily Stitch

Wavy Cable Rib Stitch

You know, in some ways knitting is like poetry.

The stitches form almost rhythmic patterns, each line building upon the one before it.

A simple repeat like this rises like a wave, building to a peak before it crashes into the shore, ready to start all over again.

But when it's finished you can see the love you put into each and every stitch.

A scarf is just a sea of such moments, captured in time.
